Pass the plate: Palin sets up legal defense fund

Sarah Palin announced the arrival of her official legal defense fund today, meant to encourage supporters to put their money where their mouth is.

Friend Kristan Cole will run the Alaska Trust Fund and is assuring contributors of both the necessity and transparency of the fund.

"Over the past months it became increasingly clear that supporters of Gov. Palin needed to help defend against the onslaught of frivolous attacks against her. These baseless accusations are designed to inhibit her ability to focus on the issues Alaskans truly care about and force massive personal debt on her and her family.... We have created one of the most restrictive and transparent legal funds in history."

Donations will be capped at $150.

On another Palin note, Chris Cillizza says the Washington-based Republican consulting firm that's been advising SarahPAC has stepped aside for various, unreported reasons, and Ben Smith says both the legal defense fund and cord cutting with Campaign Solutions are defensive signs, indicating a 2012 run is less likely.

I'm not sure -- she's had her eyes on the legal defense fund for awhile, even if it hardly seems necessary considering the book deal she's rumored to get. And the Campaign Solutions nix might just be two-way frustration over the scheduling mix-ups occurring over the last month.

So yes, these are defensive moves, but since August of 2008, most of what she's done has been a combustible mix of defense and offense.
