CBS Poll: Most Republicans doubt Palin's ability to be an effective President

A new CBS poll (pdf) shows a resounding 52%-24% of Americans think Sarah Palin resigned to further her political career and not to better Alaska, as she's claimed.

Additionally, a full 51% of Republicans don't think she has the ability to be an effective President. Only 33% do.

The breakdown:

a. 36% of Republicans think she resigned to further her career; 31% for Alaska's sake.

b. 52% of independents think she resigned to further her career; only 22% for Alaska's sake.

c. Only 23% of American voters hold a favorable view of Palin; 37% view her unfavorably, and 39% are undecided. A full 45% of Republicans are either undecided about Palin or haven't heard enough about her to form an opinion.

d. 65% of Americans doubt that Palin would be an effective President, while only 22% believe she would be.

Notes: Republican incredulity about Palin's ability to handle the job is surprisingly high, and suggest that her popularity does not necessarily inspire great trust.
