Blue states and Bachmann

Smart Politics has a pretty interesting analysis of Michele Bachmann's fundraising numbers.

Even after controlling for population, since 2007, Bachmann's received 51.4% more out-of-state money from states Barack Obama won than states McCain won.

Another obvious possibility for the counter-intuitive result is that blue states have higher average incomes; therefore, will give more as an aggregate than red states.

But Smart Politics compares Bachmann's 3rd quarter 2009 numbers with SC Rep. Joe Wilson's. It's a good contrast, since you'd think both are tapping into the same tea party base.

But...

Even after excluding the $95,300 raised by Wilson in his home state of South Carolina, McCain states (at $179.33 per 100,000 residents) still contributed at a 20.8 percent higher rate to Wilson than Obama states (at $148.45).

By contrast, in Q3 2009 Bachmann raised 30.6 percent more funds per capita in Obama states ($17.42 per 100,000 residents, excluding Minnesota) than McCain States ($13.34 per 100,000 residents).
