Erin McPike reports that George McGovern's grandson, Matt McGovern, might try to scale the $5.5 million and 6'4" inch Everest that is SD John Thune.
He is a lawyer who worked as South Dakota director of President Obama's 2008 campaign during the primary and on through the general election. He also was a law clerk for a federal judge.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee does not count Thune among its targets next year, given his high approval ratings and his war chest of more than $5.5 million.
But the South Dakota Democratic Party has insisted it will field a candidate. One party source said McGovern, 37, sees the race as an attempt to position himself for other races down the road.
Btw, Cillizza has a good read (click here) today on that CNN poll and 2012 -- he also mentions Thune as his darkhorse favorite, which is GOP12's, as well.
