Two of California's Republican gubernatorial candidates (Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner) are billionaires.
The third, Tom Campbell, is a former Congressman, professor of business, and relative pauper.
The Sacramento Bee asked the candidates if they'd accept a salary if elected.
a. Meg Whitman: No salary.
b. Tom Campbell: "How else would I eat?"
c. Steve Poizner: He'd accept a salary with a possible pay cut.
It's tough to see any political or even practical reason why Poizner would take the $. If he's paying millions to try to become governor, why would he jeopardize electoral success for the prospect of a salary of less than $200K when he gets there?
