Newt's message on NY-23

Newt Gingrich pens a new column breaking down last night's results, and of course, the most note-worthy part is his NY-23 post-mortem.

He implicitly attacks both Hoffman-backers and Scozzafava-backers, or at least that seems to be the driving distinction between "conservative activists" and "Republicans leaders" (ea).

The news wasn’t all good last night.

Both conservative activists and Republican leaders need to think long and hard about the only bad result of the night in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

The Democrat beat the conservative candidate 49 percent to 44 percent, with the Republican getting only 5%.

Conservatives can take comfort in having driven a liberal Republican out of the race. But everyone on our side has to be troubled that a Republican seat went to a Democrat and Speaker Pelosi is one vote stronger because of our division.

The emerging consensus in the party seems to be that local leaders acted badly in choosing Scozzafava, and national activists and peripatetic politicians did the same by aggressively inserting themselves into the race.
