Perry: DC can't afford to lose Hutchison

In his continual effort to keep Kay Bailey Hutchison from challenging him for Texas gubernatorial nomination, Gov. Rick Perry has pulled a new rabbit from his ten gallon hat.

"I hope that she would spend her time fighting an administration in Washington, D.C., both on cap-and-trade legislation and this healthcare legislation that would be devastating to the Texas economy.

If she would do that job first, then who knows what good could come out of that."

First, it's surprising to hear Perry acknowledging that any kind of good can come out of Washington.

Second, he's been loathe to acknowledge Hutchison could produce any kind of such good.

Remember that April 14 press conference:

Reporter: Governor, has Senator Hutchison been an active participant in the expansion of federal powers?

Perry: I would suggest that there are a number of folks in Washington, D.C. that have seen the federal powers be expanded, she being one of them.

Reporter: In what way, in what things...

Perry: [interrupts] I'll get you the long and distinguished list of those shortly.

It's an interesting new strategy by Perry -- trying to butter up Hutchison to stay put.
