Ailes: Christie cited family concerns in presidential decision

Howard Kurtz has a great, new interview with Fox News Channel president, Roger Ailes, which includes this intriguing morsel.

He plays down his role as a GOP kingmaker, though he confirmed that he invited New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to dinner (while denying he urged Christie to jump into the race).

Ailes admires Christie’s budget-cutting prowess, but says the governor told him, “I’m not running—my wife would kill me."

Meanwhile, Ailes says he'd like to add another star to his programming roster.

“I’d like to hire Hillary Clinton. She looks unhappy at the State Department. She’d get ratings.”

Btw, speaking of ratings, back in January, he had a fun exchange with Barbara Walters, where he admitted why the network hired Sarah Palin.

BARBARA WALTERS: You hired her [Sarah Palin] to be a commentator, so you must think she has some qualifications. She seems to be very popular with certain groups. Do you think she has the qualifications to be President?

AILES: Fox News is fair and balanced. We had Geraldine Ferraro on for ten years as the only woman the Democrats ever nominated; now we have the only woman that the Republicans nominated.

I'm not in politics; I'm in ratings. We're winning.
