While not specifically alluding to Rick Perry on a flat tax, Mitt Romney gave a brief comment on the idea while at a townhall in Iowa today.
"The so-called flat tax that Steve Forbes championed.... the flat tax has positive features, but then again, you've got to make sure that it doesn't raise taxes on middle-income Americans."
Matt Lewis notes that Steve Forbes -- whose 1996 plan is reportedly similar to Rick Perry's -- says that there'll probably be exemptions for those making below $36K/year. But are those middle-income Americans? I'm not sure.
Regardless, Romney's comments are intriguing today, because...
a. They suggest that he might go after Perry over general election-friendly concerns about middle-income Americans.
b. They come the day after word of Perry's proposal. These comments weren't randomly dreamed up.
