On Fox News this morning, Karl Rove hammered Rick Perry over his birther discussion with Parade magazine.
"You associate yourself with a nutty view like that, and you damage yourself.
And I know he went and he's trying to cultivate -- as all of them are -- Donald Trump, in order to get his endorsement, but this is not the way to go about doing it, because it starts to marginalize you in the minds of some of the people whom you need in order to get the election.
There's a simple answer: yes, he [Obama] was born in the United States, yes, he is eligible to serve, and don't associate yourself with sort of this nutty fringe group."
Over the weekend, Perry raised everyone's eyebrows when he indicated that he was less than certain about Obama's eligibility to be president in the interview with Parade.
Governor, do you believe that President Barack Obama was born in the United States?
I have no reason to think otherwise.
That's not a definitive, "Yes, I believe he"—
Well, I don't have a definitive answer, because he's never seen my birth certificate.
But you've seen his.
I don't know. Have I?
You don't believe what's been released?
I don't know. I had dinner with Donald Trump the other night.
That came up.
And he said?
He doesn't think it's real.
