RCP's Erin McPike has the scoop of the day.
This morning from Des Moines, Iowa, Gingrich held a conference call with some of these advisers and his senior staff to discuss his campaign going forward and to give his advocates some direction in light of the news that Mitt Romney’s campaign is preparing to attack.
According to campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond, “In response to the dynamics over the last 24 hours about the attacks coming our way, his instructions to us were to not say anything bad about Mitt Romney.”
.... In essence, that means Gingrich will be stealing from longtime putative frontrunner Mitt Romney’s own playbook: Act like the nominee for the general election, don’t engage intraparty rivals and prepare to be seen as the president.
Of course, Newt's jabbed Romney a little the past week, but it's been mild compared with the blistering attack Romney leveled on Rick Perry and will likely train on Gingrich now.
This will be a supreme test of self-discipline for Newt. If he can do it, he'll go a long way toward answering concerns about his maturity.
