Trump will reportedly endorse Gingrich

The Hill's Justin Sink writes:

Donald Trump is set to endorse Newt Gingrich Thursday in Las Vegas, according to a report by the Associated Press.

.... Gingrich was coy when asked about the possibility Wednesday, saying he had “no idea what the Donald is going to do.”

“He is always interesting,” Gingrich said of Trump. “And I don’t know of anybody who does a better job of getting attention by announcing that he will presently announce something.”

Interesting.

Trump has been critical of Romney at various times over the past year, particularly when Mitt rejected participating in Trump's debate that never was.

But... the Donald has been more positive lately about Romney, and I think quite a few people thought he'd eventually endorse Mitt to get on the good side of the likely GOP nominee.

Since you have to view nearly everything about Trump cynically, my guess is that the Newt nod is more about retaining his credibility with the tea party than anything else.

Or... another cynical interpretation is that Trump suspects Romney will be the nominee and thus, can't endorse him because it would effectively nix the Donald's long-standing vow that he'll run if he doesn't approve of the nominee.

This way, Trump can still wave the I-might-run flag around next year to boost ratings for his TV shows.

So really, there are quite a few cynical interpretations that fit this endorsement.

Here are Donald and Newt in December.
