Democrats swat down Christie's judicial nominees

The AP reports that it's looking more and more likely that Chris Christie's nod to diversity on his state's high court will be rejected by New Jersey state Democrats.

In January, Christie nominated attorney and mayor of Chatham Borough, Bruce Harris, to the New Jersey State Supreme Court.

Harris is gay, black, and Republican.

Also, allegedly unqualified, according to his opponents.

The New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus told The Associated Press that attorney Bruce Harris's legal qualifications fall short of the high standard required of the court's seven justices. No blacks currently sit on the court.

.... The black lawmakers oppose Harris's confirmation because of his lack of judicial and litigation experience and his failure to make partner at any law firm.

Christie has continued to defend his choice, however, saying Harris's experience is in line with that of the other justices. He has criticized Democrats for seemingly having their minds made up before the confirmation has begun.

Also deemed unqualified by state Democrats -- Phil Kwon, who would have been the state's first Asian-American justice.

Just to do a quick role reversal here: What would be the reaction to Republican lawmakers if they swatted down two groundbreaking picks -- a black, gay justice and first Asian-American justice -- in the course of a few months?
