Perkins: Obama's decision will help Romney with social conservatives

Tony Perkins, an influential social conservative and president of the Family Research Council, tweets today:

With marriage "evolution" #MittRomney may have been handed the key to social conservative support by Pres. Obama himself.

That's been the general consensus in the world of punditry, but it's important to hear it from an evangelical leader himself.

And again, I don't think Perkins is talking about the question of support itself, but the intensity of support (higher turnout).

Perkins also released this video, critical of Obama, which ends with the same message as his tweet.

"Mitt Romney, who has signed a pledge to support a marriage protection amendment to the U.S. Constitution, may have been handed the key to social conservative support by Barack Obama himself."

Perkins, by the way, was anything but a Romney supporter in the primary.

In November, he said:

"I think there's some problems with Mitt Romney.... record means a lot more than rhetoric, and when you look at his record, there's some real problems."

Of course, it was a fait accompli that he'd back Romney in the general, but once again, the intensity of support means nearly as much as the question of support itself.
