A Washington Post/ABC poll out today shows Barack Obama just ahead of Mitt Romney on a couple of perceptions.
Q: WHO WOULD DO MORE TO ADVANCE THE ECONOMIC INTERESTS OF...
Middle class Americans? Obama 50% Romney 44%
You and your family? Obama 46% Romney 44%
Small businesses? Romney 48% Obama 44%
Financial institutions? Romney 56% Obama 33%
Wealthy Americans? Romney 68% Obama 21%
If you go on the assumption that most voters are self-centered (a pretty fair characterization), then the question about "you and your family" is the most important.
And, as befits this margin-of-error election, Obama and Romney are locked, 46%-44%, on that question.
So... will the other issues (middle classes, small businesses, financial institutions, wealthy Americans etc) play the role of tiebreaker?
If so, Obama has the leg up on the perception that he'd be better for the middle class, and that Romney would be much friendlier to wealthy Americans.
Romney, meanwhile, has the leg up on the perception that he's looking out for the interests of small business owners.
