Romney stands by February comments on Wright

TPM reports that Mitt Romney didn't back down when asked at a Florida campaign event about February comments he made about Jeremiah Wright.

“I’m not sure what I said, but I stand by it whatever it was.”

Greg Sargent noted earlier today that Mitt Romney invoked Jeremiah Wright on Sean Hannity's show in Februrary.

Mitt, then.

"I think again that the president takes his philosophical leanings in this regard, not from those who are ardent believers in various faiths but instead from those who would like America to be more secular. And I’m not sure which is worse, him listening to Reverend Wright or him saying that we must be a less Christian nation.”

This isn't a dispute over Wright but over whether using him is legit, let alone smart.

In a way, this has echoes of the birther controversy. Essentially, the birther issues was a character attack on Obama that Republicans didn't want or like, but that the White House often seemed to encourage, because it made the GOP look a little nutty.
