Rubio heads to Guantanamo Bay

Yahoo reports that Marco Rubio is headed to the U.S. Navy Base of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba today.

At Intelligence Committee hearings, Rubio has expressed concern about the activities of the detainees once they are released from the prison, and in 2011, he co-sponsored legislation that would ensure the prison remains open.

"Guantanamo Bay plays an integral part in our ongoing effort to safeguard America and it is critical that this facility remain open and operating," Rubio said at the time.

This is yet another symbolic trip that might be designed to boost his credibility on foreign policy issues and of course, it's important to remember that Rubio's parents were Cuban exiles.

Btw, I read a fantastic book on the Cuban missile crisis a few years ago, which included this Woah, Yeah, The Cold War Was Really Scarier Than Our Terrorist Age and Our National Debt moment.

During the missile crisis, every twenty minutes, a B-52 bomber was flying off with enough nuclear bombs on board to destroy four Soviet cities (In case you were wondering, Moscow and Omsk were earmarked for the first load).
