Purdue pounced on Mitch

The Indianapolis Star goes behind the scenes on Purdue's quick and successful courtship of Mitch Daniels as its new president.

The search committee approached the governor several weeks ago about the job.

Three interviews later, Purdue decided to hire him.

“This is not a case where he sought the office,” said Trustee Keith Krach. “The office sought the man.”

That's blazing by anyone's standards, much less academia's, but I doubt that the university could really afford to drag Daniels through much more personal screening without him noting the "governor" and "potential veep" before his name.
