The "Bob Dole" bounce

Karl Rove points out an interesting piece of data -- Bob Dole got a bigger bounce (+9%) after his Veep selection than did Al Gore, George W. Bush, John Kerry, Barack Obama, and John McCain after theirs.

In fact, since 1996, the three presidential nominees who got the biggest bounce from their Veeps all went on to lose.

So there seems to be no correlation between "Size of Veep Bounce" and "I'm Now President of The United States"; in fact, if you wanted to draw anything from it, it seems the opposite (although of course we're dealing with a very small sample size here).

Lesson? Romney's small bounce in Gallup after the Ryan pick doesn't mean this was a meaningless selection (in fact, quite the opposite, as I explained here).
