While Charles Krauthammer appreciates a philosophical argument against the entitlement state, he thinks Mitt Romney went about it entirely the wrong way in the leaked video tape.
Krauthammer on Fox News:
"He said 'these are people who consider themselves victims'.
Now that's not a very smart thing to say, it's not even accurate, and you don't win an election by disparaging just about half the electorate.
So simply as a matter of appealing to the electorate, the way he put is about the worst possible way."
Having said that, Krauthammer thinks there's a diamond in the rough with all this for Mitt.
"The only way out of this is not to go over this line-by-line, but is to pivot away and say 'Look, the heart of this is the question of entitlements' and to go right after Obama with an attack."
If he does that effectively, Romney will win, Krauthammer claims -- not just the argument but the White House, too.
