Mitt Romney actually gave a really funny speech last night at the white tie, Catholic, Al Smith dinner with Barack Obama sitting nearby.
What surprised me? How good his delivery was.
"I was actually hoping the president would bring along Joe Biden this evening, because he'll laugh at anything."
Another.
"Usually when I get invited to gatherings like this, it's just to be the designated driver."
And this to top it off.
"The president has put his own stamp on relations with the church. There've been some awkward moments like when the president pulled Pope Benedict aside with some advice on how to deal with his critics.
He said, 'Look, Holy Father, whatever the problem is, just blame it on Pope John Paul II."

Here's Barack Obama's speech, which also crackled, though was a bit less surprising since we've seen him in action at the White House Correspondent's Dinner.
"I used to love walking through Central Park, loved to go to old Yankee Stadium, the house that Ruth built, although he really didn't build that."
And this.
"The unemployment rate is at the lowest rate since I took office. I don't have a joke here. I just thought it'd be useful to remind everybody."
And to top it off.
"Actually, Mitt is his middle name. I wish I could use my middle-name."
