For fairly obvious reasons (Hamas vs. Israel), Maryland Governor and possible (strike that -- probable) presidential candidate, Martin O'Malley (D) has canceled his trip to Israel.
As questions had begun to mount about the trade mission planned in September, O’Malley said in a statement Tuesday that he feared the trip could be a “distraction from the urgent cause of peace.”
O'Malley's homestate newspaper, the Baltimore Sun, had a wry take on all of it: "To save peace in the Middle East, O'Malley cancels Israel visit."
Btw, O'Malley isn't broadly disliked in Maryland. He's just broadly viewed as very, very ambitious, and hometown papers tend to write wry stuff like that about guys (like O'Malley) who've moved from city council to mayor to governor.
