Nikki's Final Five

CNN's Peter Hamby reports that SC Gov. Nikki Haley has narrowed down her list of replacements for outgoing Sen. Jim DeMint's Senate seat.

They are:

a. Rep. Tim Scott

b. Rep. Trey Gowdy

c. Former AG Henry McMaster

d. Jenny Sanford

e. Department of Health and Environmental Control's head, Catherine Templeton.

The most intriguing name on the list, of course, is Jenny Sanford -- the former spouse of what Fortune has called "The Luv Gov."

Even though she and Mark have parted ways, she doesn't seem to have parted ways with his conservative philosophy and would be a strong conservative vote in the Senate.

Still, conservatives have been pining for Tim Scott -- an African-American with impeccable conservative cred.

Finally, as for Haley herself, her reelection bid continues to look close. A new Public Policy Polling survey puts her 2010 opponent, Vincent Sheheen, up 46%-44%, thanks to a blowout 16% lead with independents.

That's much closer than things should be in a deeply red state.
